Black Soft Silk

Black Soft Silk

Black soft wire, also known as black annealed wire or flamed wire, is the most widely produced and used type of annealed wire. It is made from low-carbon steel wire rod, which undergoes drawing and high-temperature annealing to soften and naturally form a black oxide surface. Its overall texture is soft, making it a basic binding material in the civil engineering, packaging, and wire mesh processing industries.

In the production process, black soft wire is first made by cold-drawing steel wire rods to the standard wire diameter in stages, then sending them into an annealing furnace for high-temperature constant-temperature tempering to eliminate the metal stress generated during cold drawing. This significantly reduces the wire's hardness, making it less prone to breakage when bending or winding. After cooling, a uniform black oxide scale forms on the surface. A thin layer of anti-rust oil is applied at the factory, preventing rusting during short-term storage. However, it lacks a metallic anti-corrosion coating and is highly susceptible to oxidation and rusting in long-term exposed, humid environments.

The product's core characteristics are very distinct. First, it boasts excellent flexibility, easily bent and knotted by hand, and won't break even after repeated wrapping, making it suitable for use in fully automated rebar tying machines. Second, it's inexpensive, requiring no additional processes like galvanizing or oxygen-free polishing, making it significantly cheaper than hydrogen-annealed or galvanized annealed wire. Third, it has good processing performance, allowing for direct cutting, spot welding, and weaving, often used as raw material for galvanized mesh and simple welded wire mesh. Fourth, its black surface has a slight lubricating effect, preventing scratches on pipes and seedlings during tying.

Black soft wire is suitable for dry indoor and short-term outdoor applications. It's most widely used in the construction industry, primarily for rebar tying, scaffolding fixing, and splicing and fixing underfloor heating netting with plastered galvanized mesh; in the recycling and baling industry for bundling waste paper, plastics, and scrap metal; in agricultural, forestry, and horticultural indoor nurseries for branch tying and bonsai shaping; in the handicraft industry for making small wrought iron items and cage frames; and in factories for temporary binding and fixing small items.

Construction rebar tying: This is the most common application. For cast-in-place beams, columns, and slabs, the intersections of the reinforcing steel reinforcement cage are tightened with double or single strands of black soft wire. The wire is encased in the concrete upon pouring, preventing rust. 22# is the most common specification.

For plastering and wire mesh fixing: For exterior wall insulation or interior wall crack prevention, use 18# or 20# black soft wire to temporarily nail to the wall before plastering.

For material bundling: Temporarily bundle timber, scaffolding pipes, and scrap metal on construction sites.

For processing: Weaving aquaculture nets, gabion nets, making clothes hangers, or handmade wrought iron – annealed wire is soft and easy to shape.

For warehousing and agriculture: Bundling cardboard boxes, straw, and fixing vines in dry environments (note that for long-term outdoor exposure, galvanized wire is recommended).

A few practical words about purchasing and use: Don't use it naked in damp environments – if it will be exposed for several months before pouring concrete, or for long-term outdoor use, use galvanized wire; black soft wire will rust to a crisp.

No special treatment is needed for the cut (it will rust anyway), but if it's near a galvanized area, avoid letting acidic rust-preventive oil contaminate the galvanized layer.

Bring calipers when inspecting the goods-non-standard wires are available on the market; what's labeled 1.6mm might actually only be 1.4mm, making it prone to breaking when tying thick rebar. A tensile strength of 350-500MPa is generally sufficient.

Oiled vs. Unoiled-Oiled wire offers better resistance to short-term moisture, but it will stain your hands; unoiled wire feels cleaner and is suitable for dry seasons or indoor use.

In summary: black soft wire is the most inconspicuous but indispensable little thing in engineering. It's not fancy, doesn't prevent rust, but its advantages are its flexibility, ease of use, and affordable price. It's perfect for tying rebar in concrete-since it's poured in and never sees the light, rusting is irrelevant.
