Galvanized Steel Wire

Galvanized steel wire combines the dual advantages of strength and corrosion resistance. Made from low-carbon steel, it undergoes a cold-drawing process to increase its strength, allowing it to withstand significant tensile forces and resist breakage. The zinc layer acts as a physical barrier, isolating the wire from air and moisture, slowing rust and extending its service life.

Description

Touching galvanized steel wire reveals a uniform, fine zinc layer with no burrs. Whether bent, braided, or wound, it will not scratch surfaces. Galvanized steel wire is produced using two production processes: hot-dip galvanizing and cold-dip galvanizing. These differences in production process determine its performance characteristics.

Classification of Galvanized Steel Wire

Galvanized steel wire is categorized differently depending on the specific application:

General-purpose

Conforms to the GB/T 15393-2020 standard, with a wire diameter range of 0.20–6.00mm. Suitable for basic applications such as bundling and fencing.

Special-purpose

Targeted for different applications, such as bridge cables, armored cables, and telecommunications transmission, each compliant with the corresponding industry's production standards.

Special-purpose

Suitable for heavy-duty applications like lifting and marine fishing, used for exterior building insulation and agricultural protective netting. However, it's important to remember that from a corrosion protection perspective, hot-dip galvanizing is superior to cold-dip galvanizing. What problems can Galvanized Steel Wire solve for users?

In outdoor, humid, acidic, alkaline, soil, coastal, and industrial exhaust environments, a common problem with ordinary steel wire is its susceptibility to rust. Ordinary carbon steel wire exposed to air undergoes electrochemical corrosion with oxygen and moisture, resulting in yellow rust after several weeks and a thickened, rough surface after several months. This not only affects appearance but also reduces structural strength. Galvanized Steel Wire, with its zinc coating, isolates air and moisture from direct contact with the substrate, fundamentally blocking corrosion pathways. It remains rust-free for several years in dry indoor environments and maintains no significant rust for 3-10 years in ordinary outdoor environments. Heavy-duty anti-corrosion zinc-coated products can even be used in coastal areas and chemical industrial zones, with a service life of 10-20 years.

Safety is always a top concern for users. If steel wire suddenly breaks under stress, it can cause significant safety hazards. For example, a broken fence can lead to livestock escape and people breaking in; a broken guy wire can cause power poles and communication poles to tilt and collapse; broken binding wire can cause building materials to scatter; and internal corrosion and breakage of the steel wire rope can lead to hoisting accidents. Galvanized steel wire can significantly reduce corrosion rates, prevent accidents caused by breakage, and improve safety in use.

Maintenance of Galvanized Steel Wire

When using galvanized steel wire for an extended period, careful maintenance and care are crucial. This is done to extend its service life by slowing the corrosion of the zinc coating and preventing premature exposure of the substrate, thereby extending its service life. Specific maintenance procedures are as follows:

Daily Inspection

In a dry indoor environment, inspect every 6-12 months; in a humid environment, inspect every 3-6 months. For harsher environments, monthly inspections are recommended. Check for white rust, red rust, and damage to the zinc coating.

01

Structural Integrity Inspection

For galvanized steel wire subjected to frequent stress, inspect for broken wires, deformation, looseness, and other signs. In particular, check joints and bends with a tool to ensure uniform stress distribution and no wear.

02

Cleaning

Rinse any dust, sand, bird droppings, and other contaminants from the surface with clean water to avoid corrosive media. For oil and industrial contaminants, use a neutral detergent to avoid corrosion of the zinc coating. In highly corrosive environments, shorten the cleaning time.

03

Local Repair

For minor damage, gently sand the damaged area and surrounding area with sandpaper to remove oxide layers and impurities. Wipe with a clean cloth, then repair with cold-spray zinc paint, ensuring the zinc coating is >50μm thick and fully covered.

Extensive damage to the galvanized steel wire is recommended for replacement.
